How Often Should I Pump My Septic Tank?

A starting reference by household size and tank capacity. The right answer for your system is a quick phone call.

Pumping Schedule

The Pumping Schedule Table Is a Starting Point, Not a Rule.

Keep in mind that the pumping schedule table below is not an exact schedule of when you should have your septic tank pumped. The frequency depends on a number of factors: how often it's used, the number of people using it, the age of your system, water usage, garbage disposal use, and whether your system is conventional or aerobic. If you think it's time to have it pumped, give us a call.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I get my septic tank pumped?
It depends on tank size and household size. A typical 1,000-gallon tank serving a four-person household should be pumped every 2 to 3 years. Use the table above as a starting reference, then call us for a quick assessment.
What happens if I don't pump on schedule?
Solids overflow into the drain field and clog it. Drain field replacement is one of the most expensive septic repairs, and almost always avoidable with routine pumping. You'll also see yard pooling, slow drains, odors, and eventually sewage backup inside the home.
Do aerobic septic systems need to be pumped?
Yes. The trash tank on an aerobic system still accumulates solids and needs pumping, typically every 2–5 years. That's separate from the quarterly TCEQ-required maintenance visits. See our maintenance contracts.
How do I know if my tank needs pumping now?
Slow drains throughout the house, gurgling noises in pipes, foul odors near the tank or drain field, water pooling on the surface, or an aerobic alarm light: any of these and it's time to call. Don't wait for a full backup.
How much does septic tank pumping cost?
Cost varies with tank size and access. Call us at 817-645-7586 for a quick free quote. We'll ask a few questions and give you a number over the phone.
